A mildly entropic and highly redundant article, let’s read it

A mildly entropic and highly redundant article, let’s read it
Scroll down for Practice Questions
Redundancy- The basic means of redundancy is something can predictable because of high predictability there is low information. The predictability increases so the information decreases or low in amount. The opposite of redundancy is entropy where the predictability is always low in comparison to redundancy, so the low predictability and high information is entropic.

Now in other words we can say two side of the coin its is redundant or highly predictable… similarly if we meet over friend in the road then we must say “HELLO” it is predictable or redundant…so basically we easily get that point that redundancy have no use in communication or we can say that once we use something or known about that we can easily predict in that situation so we consider it as a redundancy which is not merely useful in communication …but in practical situation or communication it is not possible to communicate without redundancy ..It is necessary part of every conversation.
According john frisky in the English language 50% words are redundant so its look funny that we delete half of the language words and still found it useful for communicate…it’s not expect at all…all the words are equally important…
Redundancy is also equally important in the theory of information said by Shannon’s redundancy in their model “mathematical model of communication”… for example if we want to communicate with mass audience or we can say heterogeneous audience. We have to create the message which highly redundant in nature.  On the other hand the small group of audience or specialist or we can say homogeneous audience easily reaches with entopic message. For example any bath soap ad writing is more redundant in comparison to any business ad writing.
Similarly in languages or this telephonic model explain us that channel or audience play a vital role in explaining redundancy an entropy .Such as when we communicate by telephone and undergo disturbances, we can spell the letter like cat for C … its is redundant
So the oral communication or speeches need to be more redundant than any text message or writing because listener or hearer can’t know their own redundancy but reader easily read message twice. Now the point comes in our mind where the problem or difficulty generated… so basically problem in accuracy and error recognition some time in channel and noise or in the nature of message or in the audience perception as we read earlier level 1, 2, 3 in Shannon’s and weaver model of communication..
Entropy- entropy is random in nature its comes where the situation can’t be ascertained the possibility entropy as a concept less valuable for laymen which having difficulty in understanding too much information in one package but highly important for scholar who wants lots of information.   For example if u wish to collect any information on specific mobile which better than mine own mobile u read their configuration and easily understand where all complete message about the mobile give in one specific area..it’s a entopic message means less predictable and highly informative on the other hand a person who first time purchase smart phone, watch, and attract by the theme of ad or rate of phone and buy it its predictable or redundant…
. Another example is Aids sufferer’s people. Also known as HIV+ve can’t sure how long they live and when the death comes. Because of the death is an organization system which unpredictable.
And the conclusion is entropy less predicted highly informative or uncertainty bigger the available information bigger in the communication process.

Decoding defamation: A Must to know for Journalists: Section 499 and its Implications

Defamation: Section 499 and its Implication
Scroll down for Practice Questions
In the words of Marvin Olasky, “More people need to understand the games secular liberals play (Marlin, 2013). Here's one rule-of-thumb: No matter how bad a story sounds - particularly if it sounds bad - recognize the pattern of defamation”

“Defamation” is the generic name for the torts of slander and libel. Defamation is to protect the “Freedom of speech and expression” and thus ability of the press to investigate and bringing people’s attention towards malpractices and inflated stories. It strikes a balance between the need to protect reputation and the general right of freedom and speech.

Section 499 of Indian Penal Code describes defamation. Defamation when done through spoken words, gestures, form of rumors and inflated stories is termed as Slander. Defamation when takes place through written ways is known as Libel.  Defamation in India is covered by both the criminal law and the civil law.

There are exceptions also when defamation is not registered.
§   Defamation will not take place, when whenever something is communicated for public welfare and public benefit.

§   It is not defamation to express views about any government official in regard of his discharge of his public duties.

§       It is not defamation to publish true or substantial report of a court proceeding.

§     It is not defamation to express views in good faith about the merits of any case, civil or criminal which has been decided by court (Supreme Court of India).

§      It is not defamation if a person conveys caution to one person against the other, intended for the good of a person to whom it is conveyed or for public good.

Various punishments for the criminal offence of defamation as described by the Indian Penal Code are as follows:

Section 500: This section says that whoever defames another person will simply serve a term of two years or with fine or with both.

Section 501: Whoever will engrave or print matter which is defamatory for another person will be punished with an imprisonment of two years or with fine or with both.

Section 502: Whoever will sells or offers for sale any printed or engraved material containing defamatory matter will be punished with an imprisonment of two years or with fine or with both.

In civil law, the amount of damages to the reputation of a person differs from case to case and it is to be determined by the judge. (Source: Media Law and Ethics by M Neelamalar)
According to Sir Winston Churchill, “Some people’s idea of free speech is that they are free to say what they like, but if anyone says anything back, that is an outrage”

Understanding the basics of Communication and the SHANNON AND WEAVER’S MODEL:-The Mathematical model of communication

Understanding the basics of Communication and the SHANNON AND WEAVER’S MODEL:-The Mathematical model of communication
Scroll down for Practice Questions

Communication is an activity which done by all of us, every one communicate to share their ideas, thoughts or feelings through sign n symbols, oral n etc. Everyone have their own language of expression animals, plants, human... the while nature communicate with each other… basically communication is not a subject we do this activity by birth...as no one gives any idea about how to react when you are happy or sad or how to learn facial expression..It’s all thing are look illogical in academic sense, but these all things are important in many areas of study  for example sociologist and psychologist they give their views or judgment on the basis of verbal and non verbal communication. So this the important part of study and life too. So there is one thing that very clear to all of us that communication amenable to study but it is compulsory in multi – disciplinary area of study………..

Now the topic comes in our mind that what we study in it so….we learn about sign and codes as well as symbols
Sign are graphical or act representation of something that we use explain others about that thing
Codes are planning or system where all sign n symbol properly organize and by both this the communication run smoothly.
Some definitions which explain my words more properly are their…
: - communication is the “interchange of thoughts and ideas”. – HOBEN
: - “Every communication act is viewed as transmission of information consisting of discriminative stimuli from a source to receptive”. - NEWCOMB
:-“An interchange of thoughts opinion or information thoughts ,speech, writing, or sign is called communication”- ROBERT ANDERSON

SIMILARLY by JOHN FISKE {Was a professor of communication arts at the University of Wisconsin Madison} say in his book “Introduction to communication studies” [studies in culture and communication] THAT- there are two main schools in the study of communication -
First- communication as a “transmission of message”
Second- communication as “production and exchange of meaning of meaning”

The “transmission of message” reflects that how sender and receiver encode and decodes any message or information and how transmitter uses the channels and media for communication. Similarly on the other hand “production of exchange of meaning” it reflect that how message or text interact with receiver to understand the meaning and able to decode sender.

Here we understand one thing properly the role of text in our culture …because the sender and receiver may be belongs to different culture in that case the use of term signification arises for this school.

Basically the study of communication is the study of text and culture or culture differences for that we have one method –the study of semiotics means the science of sign and meaning.

Now we discuss about some communication model to understand better communication studies and their processes

SHANNON AND WEAVER’S MODEL-{Mathematical model of communication}
Shannon and weaver’s model of communication is the best example to understand the communication as a transmission of message. Claude Shannon- (1948) come out with an article “mathematical  theory of communication”

Shannon presents it as a simple linear process. According to John Fiske, Shannon and weaver identify three levels of problems in the study of communication (Fiske, 1990)

Level 1 {Technical Problem} – how accurately the symbols of communication be transmitted.
Level 2 {Semantic Problem} – how preciously do the transmitted symbols convey the desired meaning?
Level 3 {Effectiveness Problem} – how effectively does the received meaning effect conduct in the desire way?

All three levels are interrelated to each other.the main point to study in that how we can improve accuracy and efficiency in communication act.

Now back on the terms of model:  (Refer to model above)

1: the “information source” is the first term; works to select message out of a set of huge possible message.

2: the term “transmitter” transforms the message into signals that sent a message to commutation medium or channel for receiver.

3: the third term “receiver” is just opposite to source or we can say kind of inverse transmitter which reforming the transmitted signals over back into message and describing source’s message or interpreting it.

Now this message is after all processes set to the “destination” the final term of model. So we can say it that destination is the final receiver or the message come finally to the initial receiver and the whole transmission is ultimately accomplished.

In between the whole model the most unique and important new term introduce by Shannon and weaver is “noise”. They clarify it that this whole model design on the idea of telephonic conversation where signal or channel transmitted the information so its is obvious that some hindrance or barrier comes. They called it noise. Noise comes internal or external sources .

Preparing for big competitive exams like UGC NET? Break out from the carcinogenic procrastination loop

Many students suffer from procrastination. You are not the only one if you have the habit of postponing things and giving yourself excuses.

The most common procrastination excuses that students give to themselves are “I will do this chapter tomorrow”, “This is a huge syllabus and I don’t want to think about it right now” etc.....

All these excuses compel the student to study under time pressure, which doesn’t always work well. While some students are able to study better under pressure, most students fail to complete the syllabus and revise it in such a short span of time. Therefore, you should always try to avoid procrastination.

What causes procrastination?

When we have plenty of time to complete or accomplish something, we tend to postpone it instead of working on it now. This human condition is known as procrastination. We are surrounded with a lot of distractions in today’s world, which often results in procrastination.

Cell phones and social media play a huge role in distracting us. Students are unable to focus in studies due to these distractions. As a result, they tend to postpone things for later. When you are preparing for competitive exams, you have to make sure that you don’t procrastinate for too long. Distractions are inevitable, but you need to focus on your goals.

Let’s look at the 5 amazing ways by which you can avoid procrastination:

 Distraction-free environment is necessary

In order to stop procrastinating, a distraction-free environment is necessary. You can be productive and successful when you are working in a distraction-free environment. Therefore, you should switch off your phone during your study hours so that you can study without any distractions. Your mind will then be totally focused on studies and you will get great results.

 Do not waste time

When you have idle time, don’t waste it. Start with a new chapter or a project. Once you begin it, you will be able to focus on it and complete it easily on time. It will also give you enough time to revise before your exam.

Have a healthy lifestyle

You must have a healthy diet, sleep for 8-9 hours and exercise everyday if you want to avoid procrastination. With a healthy body and a healthy mind, you won’t want to procrastinate. You will feel active, upbeat and positive which will let you perform better. If you are tired, your productivity will be low and you will procrastinate often.

Mix up and break a huge project

Mix up your subjects and assignments so that you don’t feel bored. Try to keep your schedule interesting so that you enjoy your tasks. If you have a huge task at hand, which is scaring you, try to break it into small parts so that the task doesn’t seem daunting. If you are preparing for competitive exams, you should break your huge syllabus into small parts so that you can complete it easily.

Positive thoughts

Positive thoughts can prevent you from procrastinating. Therefore, try to think and feel positive throughout the day.

It sounds impossible initially, however I must say that you already have it in you to achieve everything what you want to achieve each minutes each day. With a whole new perspective,  a small urge to achieve with a comprehensive plan you will cut through the way to put a stop on procrastination  forever. The above 5 tips are the beginnings you need to find out the rest. I am sure, that you will surely be able to avoid procrastination and be more productive.

Understanding Freedom of Speech and Expression

In the words of Sormen Kierkegaard........

“People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use.”

“Freedom” is a very important term for all of us and we Indians are being awarded with this right by our Constitution framers .Our visionary Constitution framers had actually imagined that the people of this democracy really need the gift of freedom and liberty. While drafting the Constitution they observed the feature of American Constitution (Bill of Rights) and took inspiration from it and awarded us with all major freedom under article 12-35.They ensured that every realm of the society gets covered under this one umbrella and this country rejoices every bit of it.

A very important freedom that is being awarded in this list is “Freedom of Speech and Expression” under article19 (1)(a). Freedom of speech and expression plays a vital role in every individual’s life as we cannot imagine our existence without it. We Indians struggled for our freedom of expression since British era, they suppressed us by imposing various press regulatory acts .Right from press regulations)(1799) to the gagging act(1857) and then to Vernacular Press Act(1878) but we continued for our struggle for freedom.

Article 19(1)(a) explains that every individual has a right to express himself and can have his own opinions of thought. They can support any opinion, any belief of their own choice and Constitution gives them this right but at the same time Constitution mentions about Article 19(2) which states that freedom also has restrictions on it. Reasonable restrictions can be imposed on the grounds of sovereignty , integrity, security of the state, friendly relations with foreign states, public order, decency or morality, contempt of court, defamation and incitement to an offence.(source:Indian Polity by M Laxmikanth).

“Laws alone cannot secure freedom of expression in order that every man present his views without penalty there must be a spirit of tolerance in the entire population” -ALBERT EINSTEIN

Let’s be proactive for UGC NET Dec 2016 and leave the world to adjust

If given a chance to ask one question to your role model, say Stephen Hawking, Rodger Federer, Usain Bolt or may be Mark Zuckerberg or any one, then what will it be? In all honestly most of us would like to know their secret to success. ......but, in reality all we are looking for is quick-fix or techniques to attain the success in shortest time possible. The problem with life is, it doesn’t work for long with quick fixes. Then, what is it that does? Well, it’s not just one but a combination of 7 habits that needs to be followed and believed to be a success in your chosen field and even in life.

Let’s begin understanding with the astonishing case of an infant company which has recently put its foot in the FMCG sector but has managed to bestow sleepless nights on its competitors. I’m referring here to the ‘Swadeshi Brand’, or as portrayed so, Patanjali. Patanjali, I hope is known to all. It is a recently established brand under the leadership of Baba Ramdev who is a well-known yoga guru in India, often seen in news for the most asinine of reasons. Patanjali is the provider of more than 350 products belonging to FMCG sector, be it shampoos, soaps, oats, honey, detergents, name it and you have it. Undeterred by the presence of huge credible brands who have enjoyed the loyalty of customers over decades, Patanjali stood tall with its comprehensive strategy of being proactive in understanding the changing patterns of the needs of the Indian consumer and hit the target with its precise content. The brand created a positive environment for its products; it hit the sub-conscious mind by inducing trial on the part of the consumer. What made the leadership so effective? What are the ingredients that mixed up together to produce this profitable formula? We will answer many such questions when we arrive at the end of our discussion.

Let’s have a  brainstorming and contemplating upon the first habit of the seven habits of highly effective people advocated by the celebrated author and motivational speaker Mr. Stephan Covey. The first habit talks about the perks of being a ‘proactive person’. Under the umbrella of this habit, we shall discuss about power of making a choice, monitoring our choices, taking initiatives, how to choose between acting on or being acted upon, listening to our language, our circles of concern and influence and their relevant expansion, extent of control whether direct or indirect, whether harsh or subtle, our mistakes and their respective consequences, turning a negative situation to a positive one and keeping our commitments amidst many.

I am 100% you who is reading this NOW a well-educated & well-taught and highly ambitious individual. Who know that pro-activity regards to being anticipatory and taking future-oriented action. But, it does not end at that. Stephen Covey sub divides as well as amalgamates these sub categories, which hold individual importance in themselves, to give out an extensive analysis of Pro-activity.

Proactivity deals with self-awareness or the ability to think about your own thought process as a separate entity. You are not defined by your moods. You are not your feelings; you are not under their spell. It is you who controls what kind of emotions and reactions a stimulus will receive out of you. You are in charge here. The very fact that these set of reactions can be evaluated by us makes them separate from our identity. Self -awareness has always given man dominance over any other species of animals because they lack this great power of assessing one’s own thought process.

In this world of extensive globalization, we are bombarded with choices, alternatives, opportunities and threats. Exercising the power of making a choice comes with great responsibility and we need to respect that if we want to broaden our mental and spiritual horizons. Essential it is to acknowledge that when we start making choices based on the assessment of our behavior to different situations, we need to also keep on monitoring them.

Monitoring the choices to make sure the performance is satisfactory is very relevant because my choice may not always turn out to be beneficial in a given situation. A line has to be drawn between making choices and making sensible choices which enhance performance and productivity.

To understand it better, I would like to share one example. Apple is one of the most powerful brands across the globe. The essence of the brand lies in developing technology which is premium and ground breaking. And, the brand has often managed to bewilder consumers with its dynamic products. I don’t know how many of you are aware of this but there was a time when Steve Jobs was adroitly forced out of his own brand. It was somewhere around 1985. Jobs went on to find NeXT and explored new horizons in the field of technology. But, Apple, on the other hand, was soon having troubles without his leadership. In 1997, Apple purchased NeXT, and Jobs became the former's CEO once again. He returned and quickly took the company, which was on the verge of bankruptcy, back to profitability. They’re right when they say Karma never loses an address!

Now, try to understand the emotional stress that this kind of situation must inflict upon a person who has been forced out of his own company which was a result of many years of labor and hard work. Quite heartbreaking, isn’t it? Most of us would go crazy thinking about what a big loss we’ve suffered. But, Jobs on the contrary, never looked behind. He did not let this situation and his momentary feelings overpower his senses and his thought process. He took charge of the situation and reacted in the most positive and effective way possible. He believed in his talent and made a choice of coming up with something even bigger. He did not stop his growth at that point; instead he assessed the circumstance and turned the situation 360 degrees for himself. He is one great example of a proactive person who made sensible choices and reinforced his identity with optimism. So, what did we learn from this incident?

The importance of focusing on what you can influence and how do you expand your circle of influence. We need to make sure that we are driven by values and not feelings. We need to anticipate reactions, empathize with people, read the situation and then compensate weaknesses with vision, talent and creativity. ‘I am responsible for my work’, ‘I am accountable for what I did or didn’t do’ and ‘how can I influence this situation to get a positive outcome’ are the statements characterized by a proactive person. Proactive people aren't pushy. They're smart, they're value driven, they read reality, and they know what's needed.

Another important aspect of the principle of proactivity urges you to see yourself from your own point of view rather than judging your personality based on the projections made by the “Social Mirror”.  Why is it important, you ask? Because if the only vision that we have of ourselves comes from a Social mirror and from the opinions, perceptions, suggestions and paradigms of people around us, our society- our view would be like a reflection in the crazy mirror that you find at a fair which keeps on changing- increasing or decreasing, beautiful or ugly (ugly most of the times, at least in my case). Hence, the social paradigm, which is merely a projection, enjoys no attention as long as you are contented with yourself and your identity.

When WhatsApp owners John Koum and Brian Acton were turned down by Facebook they paid no attention to the Social mirror which apparently showed them imperfect projections like- You’re not good enough, you lack this, you are not up to the mark, and you failed in the interview. Instead of getting intimidated by these opinions both of them chose to be proactive instead of being reactive to the situation. They worked hard and developed a revolutionary messenger app which completely turned the world of telecommunications upside down. Now, people could send messages along with added features & benefits, without incurring much cost. Now, who wouldn’t like that?!  Six years down the lane, Facebook, one of the leading players in the market of Social media, decided to acquire this venture before it becomes a too big to handle competition and a potential threat to their business at a whopping 19 billion US Dollars. And with this, life comes to a full circle.

Now, I want to ask you what is common in the examples of Apple, WhatsApp and Patanjali?

All the leaders chose to act rather being acted upon by people and circumstances, they exercised the power of choice while being sober, they took initiatives, they expanded their circle of influence as and when the opportunity came, and they all turned a negative situation to their advantage by analyzing and monitoring their reaction to the stimulus.

All of them preferred to ask- What should I do next to make the best of the opportunities that lie in the future? What kind of product should I develop which serves the customer? What does the customer actually wants? How can I make it big for myself? These set of questions that a person asks himself differentiates him/her from a reactive person. And that is where an average person becomes a role model of success and power for millions to admire.

So can we ask own-self  how proactive we are for a huge exam like UGC NET? Yes I am sure you must have asked this question to yourself many a time , still I advocate ask once again. We have still time until Dec 2016 around 4 months to be proactive and give our best to drive results.

Always remember if you want to be effective, keep on elevating your life via conscious endeavor choosing the correct being proactive.

****Thank You****

Adulthood academic preparation and multi-dimensional impact of PEER PRESSURE

When it comes to peer-pressure, most of us may think of it as something all of us have faced in our teenage years, one way or the other. But seldom do we consider the multi-dimensional role it plays in our adulthood- we may not recognize it, but it is omnipresent.

One prevalent myth deals with the definition of peers that it only consists of individuals from one’s friend circle. But the truth is that peers encapsulate almost every individual, belonging to any age group, who has an influence on our lives and how we make a particular decision. They may be our friends, family members, siblings, colleagues or even our relatives in that case.

What is most important is how we deal with these fluctuating and ever- persuasive pressures in our day to day lives, especially when one is going through the arduous process of preparing for highly competitive examinations.   This pressure can be positive or negative in nature. Indulging with a group of students of similar interest can turn out to be quite fruitful as being in the company of intellectuals, primarily those, who are focused and determined towards their ultimate goal will only affect one positively since now he/she will be much more motivated to work hard and achieve better due to a continuously evolving knowledge base. Whilst, it may sound lucrative to defer the assignments for now and hang out with friends; it will only have a negative impact in the long run.

Hence, it is very essential to recognize what kind of pressure one is dealing with at a given moment. It is us, who will decide how and to what extent someone can influence our values, beliefs and decision making capabilities. Making the right choices by trusting one’s own experiences is far more credible than just going with the flow. There will always be someone out there to dominate your perception and beliefs.

It is genuinely important to not let go of our values and norms under any kind of pressure. Thinking straight and doing absolutely what your brain and heart tells you to takes a lot of courage and many of us may lack that. But, to acknowledge the righteous and moving in the right direction with determination will only help one to stand tall.

For any aspirant to maintain a focused approach, good mental health is a must. It involves making choices based on the values that one has developed through thinking independently (may include some positive influence from role model and well-wishers).  But when one acts in ways that are different from their core values, the self-esteem is hurt and they end up making the wrong choices which affects their mental health negatively and in return, the ultimate results.

Thus, reflect what you believe and think about what you want for yourself in the future by being assertive with your choices, making friends from diversified backgrounds, being mindful , learning from mistakes and working towards your goal with utmost dedication and perseverance.
