Adulthood academic preparation and multi-dimensional impact of PEER PRESSURE

When it comes to peer-pressure, most of us may think of it as something all of us have faced in our teenage years, one way or the other. But seldom do we consider the multi-dimensional role it plays in our adulthood- we may not recognize it, but it is omnipresent.

One prevalent myth deals with the definition of peers that it only consists of individuals from one’s friend circle. But the truth is that peers encapsulate almost every individual, belonging to any age group, who has an influence on our lives and how we make a particular decision. They may be our friends, family members, siblings, colleagues or even our relatives in that case.

What is most important is how we deal with these fluctuating and ever- persuasive pressures in our day to day lives, especially when one is going through the arduous process of preparing for highly competitive examinations.   This pressure can be positive or negative in nature. Indulging with a group of students of similar interest can turn out to be quite fruitful as being in the company of intellectuals, primarily those, who are focused and determined towards their ultimate goal will only affect one positively since now he/she will be much more motivated to work hard and achieve better due to a continuously evolving knowledge base. Whilst, it may sound lucrative to defer the assignments for now and hang out with friends; it will only have a negative impact in the long run.

Hence, it is very essential to recognize what kind of pressure one is dealing with at a given moment. It is us, who will decide how and to what extent someone can influence our values, beliefs and decision making capabilities. Making the right choices by trusting one’s own experiences is far more credible than just going with the flow. There will always be someone out there to dominate your perception and beliefs.

It is genuinely important to not let go of our values and norms under any kind of pressure. Thinking straight and doing absolutely what your brain and heart tells you to takes a lot of courage and many of us may lack that. But, to acknowledge the righteous and moving in the right direction with determination will only help one to stand tall.

For any aspirant to maintain a focused approach, good mental health is a must. It involves making choices based on the values that one has developed through thinking independently (may include some positive influence from role model and well-wishers).  But when one acts in ways that are different from their core values, the self-esteem is hurt and they end up making the wrong choices which affects their mental health negatively and in return, the ultimate results.

Thus, reflect what you believe and think about what you want for yourself in the future by being assertive with your choices, making friends from diversified backgrounds, being mindful , learning from mistakes and working towards your goal with utmost dedication and perseverance.
